What Is Coaching?

The International Coaching Federation (ICF), which is the leading global organization for coaches and coaching, defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership.”7

While coaching methods draw from many well-established approaches such as appreciative inquiry, motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral techniques, coaching differs from therapy and counseling in that it does not assess, diagnose or treat mental health issues. Coaches are trained when and how to refer clients to therapy. Coaching is also different from mentoring, teaching and consulting because it avoids dispensing advice and facilitates the client’s own ability to generate solutions.

In coaching sessions, she creates a safe and confidential space where her clients can work toward the goals of their choice, in congruence with their values, their aspirational self and the overarching vision and mission for their career and life. With this long-term picture in mind, she helps her clients break down large goals into small, feasible steps and achieve near-term solutions to whatever is preventing them from becoming their best selves.
